YWCA Provides Services for Women

For more than 80 years, the local Young Women's
Christian Association has been working
to unite women with diverse experiences.
The Alliance YWCA offers a variety of social and
volunteer experiences for local women. Through the
Meals-on-Wheels program, volunteers deliver nutritious
meals, prepared by Alliance Community Hospital
staff, to area shut-ins. Volunteers also assist with the
annual ABC for Kids, a school supply distribution project.
Tutoring is available at the main offices, located at
239 E. Market St., and a girl's group, Girls Together, is
offered at Alliance Middle School.
Also at the middle school, the YWCA is sponsoring
a Geography Club and the National Geography Bee.
The association also offers a Mother-Daughter
Book Club and Red Cross babysitting
clinic.
The WOW (Women off Welfare)
program supports participants in their
quest for a more independent
lifestyle. Included in the program
are transitional housing, support services, and a
career clothing closet which utilizes clothing donated
by area business women.
Part of a national movement, the local association
works with community agencies and individuals
to enhance the lives of women, children and seniors
through national initiatives such as the Week Without
Violence and the Day of Commitment to eliminate racism
and the Pink Ribbon project.
The mission of the YWCA of Alliance, rooted in the
Christian faith, is to create opportunities for women's
growth and leadership in order to obtain a common vision:
peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people,
and the elimination of racism.
