Marlington Local Schools

December 21, 2007

The past year has been an exciting and eventful one for the
Marlington School District. The district welcomed former high
school principal Jim Nicodemo as its new superintendent
at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. Nicodemo's goals as
superintendent are to achieve academic success of students, improve
school and community relations and maintain fiscal responsibility to
taxpayers of the district.
The district received its first "Excellent" rating from the Ohio
Department of Education on its report card for the 2006-2007 school
year, meeting 27 of 30 state indicators and a performance index score
of 100.8 of a possible 120 points. Superintendent Jim Nicodemo cited
the development of professional learning communities and collaboration
of staff, as well as good students, for the achievement.
At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, the district
learned that Lexington Elementary was one of six schools in Stark
County to be named a "School of Promise" by the Ohio Department
of Education. In order to be named a School of Promise, a school
must have a poverty rate of higher than 40 percent and meet or
exceed state standards in reading or mathematics. Lexington was
the only Stark County school to meet standards for both reading
and mathematics.
The district also launched a new Web site at the beginning of the
school year, www.marlingtonlocal.org. The site features current news
and upcoming events within the district, along with information on
each of the district's schools. Detailed calendars of district events are
also available on the site.
The district's mission statement is as follows: "In collaboration
with staff, community, parents, and students, the Marlington Local
School District will develop lifelong learners who understand and apply
knowledge, and demonstrate excellence in pursuing the highest
standards with effective intervention to challenge every student."
