Village of Beloit

December 21, 2007

The Village of Beloit was chartered May 21, 1863.
Seven miles east of Alliance, Beloit is located just a short
drive from Alliance, Salem, Canton and Boardman.
Beloit is governed by a Village Council along with a
mayor and Board of Public Affairs. It is protected by the
Goshen Police District and the Beloit Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire department and EMS squads service portions
of Mahoning, Stark, Columbiana and Portage counties
in addition to Beloit.
Located on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad,
the village was formerly known as Smithfield Station.
However, due to another village having that name, a contest
was held and the town was renamed by a citizen who had a
cousin who lived in Beloit, Wisconsin.
Situated in the southwest corner of Mahoning County,
Beloit had a population of 1,024 and is home to the West
Branch Local School System.
West Branch High School, Beloit Elementary and West
Branch Middle School are located on South Main Street.
The elementary schools are new and extensive renovations
and additions were done to the high school.
The Beloit Area Historical Society was established in
2004 with its meeting place at the Tin Shop, one of the
many historical buildings in the village. To reach the village
