Various programs are available throughout the
Alliance area for youths. They include the Boy
Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H Youth Development
Program and Hot Stove League Baseball.
The Alliance Hot Stove League is divided into six
leagues with more than 600 youths between the ages
of 8 and 18 participating on a yearly basis. There is
also an instructional league and the HSL's annual state
tournament is held in Alliance at Butler-Rodman Park.
Stark County is also home to a large number of 4-
H groups with more than 1,100 youths throughout the
surrounding areas involved. More than 250 volunteers
are involved with the program throughout the county
and more information can be requested by contacting
David Crawford at (330) 830-7700, ext. 115.
The Great Trail Girl Scout council promotes selfdevelopment
and free expression among girls through
peer networks and interactions with adult role models.
In the Alliance area, approximately 600 girls and 100
adults participate in the Girl Scout Program. Starting with the Daily troops for girls in Kindergarten, the
next troop, Brownie, is for girls in grades one through
three. Junior troops are for those in grades four
through six while Cadets are in grades seven through
nine and Seniors are in grades 10-12.
The Girl Scouts' local field office is located at
the Alliance YWCA, 239 E. Market St. and serves
Alliance, the three townships in Marlington, Sebring
and Beloit. The council is affiliated with the United
Way.
The Alliance Boy Scouts belong to the
Wapakonachee District of the Boy Scouts of
America's Buckeye Council. Covering seven
counties, the council serves more than 25,000 young
people promoting the enhancement of character,
citizenship and personal fitness through cooperation
with local churches, service clubs and businesses. It
follows the mission statement of the Boy Scouts of
America as it seeks to prepare young people to make
ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them
the values of the scout's oath and law.
Approximately, 1,000 boys and 200 volunteers
are involved in the 10 cub scout packs and nine
boy scout divisions in the Wapakonachee district
that serves western Stark County including Alliance,
Marlington, Louisville and Minerva school districts.
Cub scouts are for grades one through five and the
boy scouts are from ages 11-18. Like the girl scouts,
they are also affiliated with the United Way.
