The United Way of Greater Stark County was
founded by the Alliance Area United Way, the
United Way of Central Stark County and the
United Way of Western Stark County to serve all of Stark
and parts of Carroll, Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage and
Wayne counties.
The new United Way serves a population of more than
400,000 and funds programs and services at 52 local
human service agencies within those counties.
The board of trustees in Alliance, Central Stark County
and Western Stark County voted in June of 2003 to
create a new county-wide United Way that opened in
2004. A task force, comprised of members from the three
founding United Ways, developed a plan to establish a
new county-wide United Way. The boards approved the
concept based on four guiding principles.
The new board will be representative of the entire
greater Stark County area and the communities served.
The new organization will provide a two-year period
of stable funding services in each founding community to
prepare for a new system of allocations.
The new organization maintains some form of
local presence in each of the founding organizations'
communities.
There will be a period of transition to the new
allocation model that will be determined over the course
of time.
As the Joint United Way enters its third year, it has
been fortunate to witness much success including:
United Way volunteers have raised more than 9
million, surpassing the organization's goal of $8-million
from 2006. All dollars raised through the annual campaign
support programs at 49 local service providers.
The board of directors guaranteed funding in 2006
to its services providers in the same amount allocated in
2005, contingent on meeting the United Way's stringent
agency and program standards.
The United Way recently opened branches of its
2-1-1 information and referral services in Alliance and
Massillon. The offices are located at 405 South Linden
Ave. and 876 Amherst Road N.E., respectively. The
Alliance office is staffed every Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. - 5
p.m. and the Massillon office hours are every other Friday
from 8:30 - Noon.
