The Mabel Hartzell Historic Home
One of Alliance's "jewels" is at the corner of Vine Street and Park Avenue, one block east of Union Avenue, The Mabel Hartzell Historic Home. A large Victorian home built in 1867 has been restored to its original beauty. Some of the features of the home are marble fireplaces in every room, each room is furnished with period antiques, many original to the home. Some unusual pieces are a "Wooten" desk, a rosewood rectangular piano, a pump organ, several Eastlake pieces, a desk from the Ohio Statehouse and shell from the Civil War. Each of the nine rooms has unique character with accessories of the era. The Landscaping has been recently completed by grants from area Garden Clubs using heirloom plants. There is a knot garden, herbs, an arbor and a fountain. The home is owned by The Alliance Historical Society, operated and maintained by a Board of Trustees and funded through memberships, tours and donations. The home is open all during Carnation Week, various announced events and by appointment. For further information, donations or a tour, please call Gordon Harrison at (330) 823-1677, Frank Woolf at (330) 823-8592 or Joe Zelasko at (330) 821-8972.
