 Alliance Area Senior Citizens Center
The Alliance Senior Citizens Center is a non-profit organization geared towards meeting the senior citizens needs in Alliance as well as the surrounding areas. Numerous activities and functions are held at the Center to encourage Senior Citizens participation. Membership for the Center is not required but there are benefits to becoming a member such as receiving the monthly newsletter that provides a detailed list of activities and tours for the month along with the membership price on tours. The cost of becoming a member for a year is $15.00 for a single and $20.00 for a couple.
The Center is a self-supporting organization. It derives its income from special dinners and programs, the bingo program, and the Tour Department. Special dinners and programs are planned throughout the year and are generally open to the public. Ladies Luncheons along with seasonal dinners are the most popular. The bingo program is held on Monday and Thursday nights and is open to the public. Tours are planned throughout the year with one-day tours as well as over-night and extended tours being offered. Tours are offered to members first and then to anyone interested regardless if they are senior citizens.
Senior Clubs meeting on a monthly basis enjoy using the Center for their luncheon meetings. AARP, Carnation Retirees, Alliance Senior Citizens Club, Retired Genies, and the Christian Women meet regularly at the Center and always welcome new members. Socialization is one of the top priorities of the Senior Center. Seniors from the city of Alliance as well as surrounding communities gather at the Center for a variety of activities. Shuffleboard, ping pong, line dancing, chorus, karaoke, harmonica, and card playing keep seniors in touch with others who share their interest and create an enjoyable time for those participating.
The Center offers a variety of free services to the elderly that include eye screenings, hearing clinic, legal-aid appointments with these services being performed on a monthly basis. Income tax preparation assistance, and flu and pneumonia clinics in conjunction with the city health department are performed at the appropriate time of the year with information available for these services at the Center.
Seminars held at the Center keep seniors informed of health issues as well as other topics that are of interest to seniors. Numerous topics are discussed with qualified individuals to provide seniors with
up-to-date, accurate information. An outreach coordinator is on premises to assist with HEAP Applications, Homestead Exemption Forms, and other areas with which a senior may need help. Appointments may be made with the outreach coordinator through the front office.
With a very small staff that includes only four full-time employees, the Center relies heavily on volunteers. Volunteers perform a variety of duties in many capacities. They assist in the kitchen preparing and serving dinners, work on bingo nights, participate in numerous money-making activities the Center has throughout the year such as Casino Night, Senior Citizens Day in May, and the Apple/Pumpkin Festival in October, just to name a few. Volunteering is a great way to make friends and offers seniors the ability to continue contributing to their community, and new volunteers are always welcome.
