United Way of Greater Stark County
The United Way of Greater Stark County was founded by the Alliance Area United Way, the United Way of Central Stark County and the United Wayof Western Stark County and serves all of Stark County and parts of Carroll, Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage and Wayne Counties. The new United Way serves a population of more than 400,000 and funds programs and services at 52 local human service agencies. The Board of Trustees of the Alliance Area United Way, The United Wayof Central Stark County and the United Way of Western Stark County unanimously voted on June 3, 2003 to create a new county-wide United Way effective April 2004. A Task Force, comprised of members from the three founding United Ways, developed the plan to establish a new county-wide United Way. While initially every detail was not addressed, the Boards approved the concept based on four guiding principles: 1. The new Board will be representative of the entire greater Stark County area and the communities served. 2. The new organization will provide a two-year period of stable funding of services in each founding community to prepare for a new system of allocations. 3. The new organization will maintain some form of local presence in each of the founding organizations' communities. 4. There will be a period of transition to the new allocation model that will be determined by the new organization. The Task Force managed the entire process of creating the new entity, with input from 11 sub-committees, which had representation from each of the three founding United Way Boards of Trustees. Now in its second year, the United Way has seen much success. These include: 1. United Way volunteers - lead by Aultman CEO Ed Roth - raised $8,706,500 surpassing the organization's goal. All dollars raised through the annual campaign support programs at 49 local service providers. 2. United Way Board of Directors guaranteed funding in 2005 to its Service Providers in the same amount allocated in 2004, contingent on Service Providers meeting United Way's stringent agency and program standards. 3. United Way of Greater Stark County opened branches of its 2-1- information and Referral Service in Alliance and Massillon. The offices are located in the Alliance Neighborhood Center at 405 South Linden Ave. and the Massillon Community Services building at 876 Amherst Ave. N.W. The Alliance office is staffed every Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and the Massillon office is staffed every Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. 4. United Way of Greater Stark County met the comprehensive upgrades to the standards that make United Way reporting practices more consistent across the country. This consistency in reporting is intended to help donors and the public to more clearly understand how United Ways are investing donor dollars wisely and efficiently for the purpose of improving lives and strengthening communities. 5. In compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, United Way of Greater Stark County established procedures and policies to facilitate the making of disclosure including establishing a Code of Ethics and Whistleblower Protection Policy. In addition, the three founding United Ways received clean audits of their individual financial records and process.
