The Village of Sebring
During the past year, the downtown business district of Sebring has undergone a dramatic change. Through the generous contributions of the Schreckengost family, the corner of Oregon Avenue and 15th Street will become a focal point of the newly renovated downtown. Schreckengost Park will include landscaping, decorative walkways, a gazebo for special occasions and murals depicting pottery scenes. Schreckengost Park was dedicated July 2, 2005. The improvements to Schreckengost Park are just the latest in ongoing renovations to the Sebring downtown business area. Several businesses have already invested in facade renovations in the past year with more planning similar investments in the near future. The safety forces in the village continues to grow. A Police Reserve Unit was resurrected by Chief Ray Heverly and the addition to Fire Station No. 1 was dedicated in March of 2005. Named in honor of long-time Fire Chief Jim Cannell, additions to the station included new offices for the chief, a communications room and a 6,780-square-foot garage to house the vehicles bringing the total size of the fire station to 13,000 square feet. "One of the best and biggest improvements on the agenda is the Ohio Avenue paving project," said Mayor John Smith. Grants were obtained from ODOT for the project which totals $470,000. Another village improvement project is the water lift station on Texas Avenue. The state-of-the-art lift station will greatly improve the water pressure on the south side of Sebring that includes Copeland Oaks Retirement Community. "This administration has worked hard to get the village finances back on track and I think we're there," Smith said. "Theres a lot of pluses here. There's no place else I'd rather live."
