The Sebring Local School District is a small district with 716 students. The students are educated in the districts two buildings, B. L. Miller elementary for grades K-6 and Sebring McKinley Junior/Senior
High School for grades 7-12. The district recently completed a 17- million -dollar building project
for grades 7-12 in September of 2002.
The Sebring Schools high academic standards as well as offering a variety of extra-curricular activities opportunities at Sebring Schools include college preparatory classes and extra-curricular clubs and groups, such as academic challenge, and a Big Brother/Big Sister Program where high school students visit the elementary school several times a year and keep in contact with younger students. Also, the
students have an opportunity to participate in activities ranging from school plays to volunteer programs.
According to Superintendent Howard T. Friend, "We encourage our students to participate in several activities. Being a smaller school district, students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of
activities through the school year."
He continued, "Academically, the district continuously looks at state standards to make sure the district's curriculum aligns with the state standards."
"We are always looking for new ideas and strategies to improve the curriculum in order to meet the needs of our students," Friend said.
Intervention programs such as one-on-one instruction in reading and math are available at both the elementary and high school levels. The district also received a collaboration grant for special education
which creates more collaboration between special education teachers and regular education teachers. This helps special education teachers gain a better understanding of what takes place in the regular education classroom.
Sebring continues to update the technology in the district each year. New computers are purchased each year and students are given the opportunity to take courses on-line in certain circumstances. Textbooks are updated on a regular basis, and supplemental materials for the classroom and purchased annually.
The Sebring schools offer a low teacher-student ratio in several grade levels at the elementary level, as well as upper-level science and math courses at the high school. We also offer an all-day kindergarten
program. Students who wish to take vocational classes attend the Mahoning County Career and Technical School.
After more than 70 years in the Tri-County athletic league, the Sebring Local School District will become a member of the inter-county league during the 2005-06 school year. This will only be for one year due to the combining of the inter-county league and the Tri-County league at the beginning of the 2006-07 school year.
