Mount Union College College
For the 14th consecutive year, Mount Union College has been ranked among the top 20 comprehensive colleges in the Midwest region by the editors of "U.S. News & World Report" as well as cited by them as a "Best Buy." Mount Union has also been named as a College of Distinction. In April of 2005 the Schooler Lecture, which brings prominent speakers to campus annually, featured former U. S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who called on leaders and citizens to oppose terror on every front. In May the record 433 graduates of the Class of 2005 represented the largest number of graduates in Mount Union history, eclipsing the 429 students who graduated in 2002. For the 50th consecutive year, the College reported balanced financial operations, an incredible mark considering the volatility of the U.S. economy during the last five decades. The streak drew accolades from business leaders and community members throughout the area. Two special projects held during the year allowed students to interact with members of the Alliance community. The "Explore the World Through Art" program, a collaboration with the Alliance Middle School, brought Mount Union's international students from Japan into seventh grade art classes to teach traditional Japanese art, including origami, sumi calligraphy, potato stamping and kimono fabric design. In addition, college students worked with area middle school students through the Navigators Program to explore stories of those who lived during the Great Depression and World War II through "Heroes in Our Midst." In July Dr. Richard F. Giese became the 11th president of Mount Union College, returning to Mount Union where he formerly served for 19 years as a faculty member and in increasingly responsible administrative positions.
